Puzzles

Me and my roommate (sriraag) were discussing about puzzles few days back. Yep! He is preparig for his interviews and as usual i was 'vetti' (jobless) trying to help him. I usually ask him 1-2 questions everyday and give him the answers next day. This reminded me the days when i was doing puzzzles rigorously. We were bunch of vetties (all fresh out of college) who spent lot of time in solving puzzles. It seems people in Microsoft are fond of puzzles and one will surely get quite few in their interviews. Google is also following the same approach in their interviews(Disclaimer: Prev two statements are all 'heard' ones and they are provided 'AS-IS')

I WILL NOT be posting the answers.

1) There are 9 balls. Out of this only one is odd in weight. It can be greater or lesser in weight. Waht is the minimum number of weighing required to find the odd ball and how.

2) There are 10 jars containing balls. All jars have balls of equal weight except for one. you have a weighing m/c. find the minimum number of weighing required to find the jar containing odd balls.

3) You have a 10 liter cylindrical glass jar. It has a marking for 2 liter level. You have infinite supply of water and nothing else. No extra vessel, scale or lid. You need to mark the 1,2..9 liter levels in the jar.

4) There are 25 horses. There is a ground with 5 lanes. In how many races can you find the top 3 horses.

5) Find the four numbers (1<= x <= 40) such that using these four numbers i can get all numbers in 1..40 (btw you can use only addition and subtraction)

6) There is a building with 100 floors. you have 2 eggs. In how many attempts you can find deterministically the minimum floor from which dropped the egg will break.

7) There are 4 ants in the four edges of a square. All of them can walk along the edges. What is the probability of these ants dont collide with each other if they start moving.

8) There are 100 blue balls in a jar1 and 100 red balls in jar2. You need to put the balls in shuch a way that the probability of picking a red ball is maximum. What is the max probability you can get.

9) Assume there is a cuboid. It has acuboidal hole in it. How can you cut this cuboid in 2 equal halves.

10) There are 100 cells in a prison. All are closed. First day the jailer comes and toggles (open-close: close-open) all the jail doors. Second day toggles all the cells which are multiples of 2. Third day toggles the cell which are multiples of 3 and so on. At the end of 100th day what cell will be open.
